Cartridge not read

Cartridge Not Read

A cartridge that fails to boot, shows a garbled screen, or freezes at startup almost always has a connection problem. Dirty contacts are by far the leading cause, and they are usually easy to fix.

First steps

  • Remove and firmly reinsert the cartridge several times; this alone often restores a flaky connection.
  • Power off fully between attempts rather than swapping carts while powered.

Clean the contacts

  • Wipe the cartridge's gold edge connector with isopropyl alcohol on a lint-free swab until it comes away clean.
  • Clean the console's cartridge slot pins with alcohol on a thin swab or a dedicated cleaning card.
  • Let everything dry completely before powering on again.

Never blow into a cartridge. The moisture in your breath accelerates corrosion of the contacts, the very problem you are trying to fix.

If cleaning does not help

  • Test other cartridges. If all fail, the console's slot pin connector may be worn or bent and can be cleaned more deeply or replaced.
  • If only one game fails everywhere, that cartridge's board or save chip may be at fault.

Isolate cart versus console

One bad game across multiple consoles points to the cartridge. Multiple games failing in one console points to the slot. This simple test saves a lot of guesswork.

Most read failures clear up with a careful cleaning. troubleshooting
