No Video

A Nintendo 64 that powers on but shows no picture is usually suffering a cable, connection, or display-input problem. A truly dead console is less common than it first appears. Check the simple causes first.

Confirm the basics

  • Verify the TV is set to the exact input the console is plugged into.
  • Check that both the power supply and the AV cable are fully seated.
  • Confirm the power LED lights; if not, the issue is power, not video.

Test the cable and port

  • Swap in a different AV cable; multi-out cables and pins fail often.
  • Wiggle-test gently while powered to see if a loose connection restores the picture, which points to a worn port.

If you recently modded the console

After an RGB or HDMI install, no video almost always means a wiring fault. Power down and inspect every solder joint, the sync line, and all grounds before anything else.

Black screen versus no signal

If the TV reports "no signal," the console is sending nothing, pointing to cable, port, or power. If you see a black screen but the TV detects a signal, the console is outputting and the fault may be a game, cartridge, or sync issue.

Reseat the cartridge as well, since a failed cartridge read can leave the screen blank. troubleshooting
