Save Types

Nintendo 64 games store progress in several different ways, and knowing which type a game uses matters when you back up saves, use a flashcart, or repair a cartridge. Unlike later consoles, the N64 had no single standard, so the save chip lived inside each game cartridge.

The main save technologies

  • EEPROM, small chips in two common sizes, used by many lighter titles
  • SRAM, battery-backed memory found in some larger games
  • Flash RAM, a later, higher-capacity option used by some big late-era releases
  • Controller Pak, a removable memory card that plugs into the controller

Why it matters for flashcarts

A flashcart must emulate the correct save type for each game or your progress will not stick. Most carts detect this automatically from a built-in database, but homebrew and obscure titles sometimes need the save type set manually in the menu.

Batteries and longevity

SRAM saves depend on a small battery soldered to the cartridge board. After decades these batteries die, and once one fails the game can no longer hold a save. Replacing it is a straightforward soldering job covered elsewhere in this wiki. reference

EEPROM and Flash RAM do not rely on a battery, so games using them keep saving indefinitely. When backing up, always export each save in the format matching its chip.
