Demos
Demos
Demos are short programs whose only purpose is to show off graphics, sound, or clever programming tricks. On the Nintendo 64 they form a small but lively corner of the homebrew world, and they make excellent test material when you are tuning a video mod or learning what the hardware can do.
Types of demos
- Graphical demos that render spinning shapes, particle effects, or full demoscene-style productions
- Audio demos that stream music or synthesize sound through the console's audio hardware
- Technical proofs that demonstrate a new rendering technique or a workaround for a hardware quirk
Because demos are usually small and self-contained, they load instantly from a flashcart and rarely depend on save accessories. That makes them ideal for quick testing.
Demos as test tools
A demo with steady motion and bright colors is perfect for checking a fresh RGB or HDMI installation. You can spot color errors, jitter, or sync problems far more easily on moving graphics than on a static menu.
Running demos
Treat a demo like any homebrew ROM: copy it to your SD card and select it from the flashcart menu. Many demos come from annual demoscene events or developer experiments, so keep an eye on community release threads for new productions. fun
