FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I run homebrew or backups on real hardware?

Use a flashcart such as an EverDrive-64, 64drive, or SummerCart64. It loads ROM files from an SD card and presents a menu on the console. There is no software exploit needed, the cart is the method.

Why does my controller drift or feel loose?

The analog stick mechanism is worn. This is the most common N64 fault and is fixed by replacing the stick module, not by recalibration. Reproduction, GameCube-style, and Hall-effect kits are all available.

Why is the picture so blurry?

Two reasons: the analog signal is soft, and many games add their own blur filter. Switch to S-Video or a digital mod for the signal, and use a de-blur feature to remove the game filter.

Can I play import games?

Yes, with a region-free mod or a flashcart, but remember that PAL and NTSC consoles output different refresh rates, so video timing matters as much as region.

Is emulation good enough?

It has improved greatly but remains imperfect because the N64 is hard to emulate accurately. For development and authentic play, real hardware with a flashcart is still the reference.

Why won't my game boot?

Most often, dirty contacts. Clean the cartridge edge and console slot with isopropyl alcohol before suspecting anything deeper. faq
