PAL passthrough
PAL Passthrough
Crossing between PAL and NTSC is harder than an NTSC-to-NTSC swap because PAL enforces its region difference at the PIF chip, not just with plastic tabs. A passthrough adapter is the least invasive way around this for original cartridges.
How passthrough works
An adapter such as the N64 Passport sits between the cartridge and the console. It supplies the lockout signalling the console expects, allowing an out-of-region original cartridge to boot without modifying the console itself.
- Get a passthrough adapterAn N64 Passport-style adapter handles the lockout mismatch between PAL and NTSC.
- Insert the adapterSeat the adapter in the cartridge slot, then place the game cartridge into the adapter.
- Power on and verifyThe console should accept the lockout and boot the out-of-region game.
A passthrough defeats lockout only. It does NOT convert the TV standard. A PAL console still outputs 50Hz and an NTSC console still outputs 60Hz, so the game may run at the "wrong" speed or fail to display on an incompatible TV. Confirm your display handles both standards.
The donor alternative
Instead of an external adapter, some people perform a donor mod, transplanting a compatible lockout chip into the console. This is more involved and permanent, but removes the need for an adapter every time.
