Compatibility Notes

Not every mod, accessory, or piece of software works the same across all Nintendo 64 units. The biggest variables are board revision and console region. This table summarizes what to watch for.

AreaDepends onNotes
RGB modBoard revisionSome later boards lack accessible signals; check first
HDMI modsBoard revisionInstall details vary; confirm kit compatibility
S-VideoRegion/unitCommon on NTSC, often absent on PAL units
Native RGBRegion/unitSome PAL units output RGB by default
Save dataGameEEPROM, SRAM, or Flash RAM varies per title
Cheat codesGame regionCodes are version-specific and can corrupt mismatched copies
ROM hacksBase versionPatch must match the exact region and revision

Identify your board first

Before any internal mod, open the console and read the board revision. This single piece of information determines which RGB and HDMI methods apply and prevents buying the wrong parts.

Region and timing

Remember that region affects more than which cartridges fit. A PAL console runs at 50Hz and an NTSC console at 60Hz, which influences game speed and how some homebrew and demos behave. reference

When in doubt, verify on your specific hardware rather than assuming all N64 units are identical.
