Controllers

Controllers

The N64 controller is famous for its three-pronged shape and central analog stick. For modding and import use, a few details are worth knowing.

The analog stick

The original stick uses a gear-based mechanism that wears down over time, causing loose, drifting movement. Replacement stick modules using more durable designs are widely available and are a common, satisfying upgrade.

The Controller Pak slot

The expansion slot on the underside of the controller accepts add-ons:

  • Controller Pak: a memory card for storing game saves, separate from cartridge save chips.
  • Rumble Pak: adds force feedback in supported games.
  • Transfer Pak: links Game Boy cartridges to certain N64 games.

Region and controllers

Controllers are not region-locked. An NTSC-J controller works perfectly on a PAL or NTSC-U console and vice versa, so you can mix and match freely regardless of where your console or games came from.

Buying tip

When buying used controllers, expect a worn stick. Factor in a replacement module, or buy refurbished controllers that already have one fitted. The plastic shell and buttons usually last far longer than the stick.
