Cart tab removal
Cart Tab Removal
Cart tab removal is the simple, well-known trick for playing games across the two NTSC regions. NTSC-U and NTSC-J consoles are functionally identical for video, so the only thing stopping their cartridges from fitting is a pair of plastic tabs inside the cartridge slot.
Why it works
The tabs are a purely physical block. NTSC-U and NTSC-J share the same 60Hz TV standard and compatible lockout, so once the cartridge can seat fully, the game simply runs. There is no chip to bypass.
- Confirm both sides are NTSCTab removal only works between NTSC-U and NTSC-J. It does not bridge the gap to PAL.
- Locate the slot tabsLook inside the cartridge slot for the two small plastic tabs that block out-of-region shells.
- Remove carefullyThe tabs can be removed so any NTSC cart fits. Work slowly and avoid touching the metal pins.
- Test fitInsert an import cart gently; it should now seat fully and boot.
Removing tabs is permanent. An alternative is trimming the tabs on the cartridge shell instead of the console, which keeps the console untouched. Never force a cart, before or after.
