The N64 keeps the shopping list short. Here is everything that covers the common tasks.
Essentials
- A flashcart: an EverDrive-64 X5, EverDrive-64 X7, or SummerCart64, matched to your goals.
- An SD or microSD card: a modest capacity is plenty since N64 ROMs are small. Buy genuine cards from a trusted seller.
- A card reader: to copy files from your computer to the SD card.
- A working N64 and controller: any retail console, plus a TV or upscaler that accepts its video output.
Optional, depending on goals
- Expansion Pak: required by certain games; installs in the lid on top of the console.
- USB cable: the X7 and SummerCart64 support USB transfer for advanced workflows.
- Passthrough adapter: such as an N64 Passport, only if you intend to play PAL/NTSC cross-standard original cartridges.
- Anti-static wrist strap: cheap insurance when handling bare flashcart boards.
What you will NOT need
No soldering iron, no special programmer, and no firmware files for basic flashcart use. The console stays stock, so most setup happens entirely on your computer.
