Identifying your model
Identifying Your Model
All standard N64 consoles share the same cartridge interface, so identification is mostly about region and a few cosmetic or internal differences. The label on the underside is your primary source of truth.
Reading the bottom label
- NTSC-U: North American consoles, typically marked with a model number beginning NUS-001 and US regulatory text.
- NTSC-J: Japanese consoles, with Japanese-language labelling.
- PAL: European and Australian consoles, often noting 50Hz and the local market.
Other variants
| Variant | How to tell |
|---|---|
| Standard retail N64 | Familiar grey or coloured shell, four controller ports |
| iQue Player | China-only handheld-style unit; not a standard cartridge console |
| Funtastic / special colours | Cosmetic only; identical internals to standard units |
Why region beats everything else
Special editions and shell colours do not change compatibility. The deciding factor for imports and flashcart behaviour is whether the console is NTSC-U, NTSC-J, or PAL, since that determines the PIF chip and TV standard.
Once you know the region, the rest of this wiki applies the same way to every retail unit. identification
