Region & Imports

Importing games for the N64 is very doable, but the difficulty depends entirely on which way you are crossing. The key is to separate two questions: will the cartridge physically fit and unlock, and will the console output a compatible video signal?

The easy crossing: NTSC to NTSC

NTSC-U and NTSC-J share the same 60Hz TV standard, so the only barrier between them is a set of plastic tabs in the cartridge slot. Remove the tabs and out-of-region NTSC carts drop in and run. No video issues, no lockout chip drama.

The hard crossing: NTSC to/from PAL

PAL adds two obstacles at once. Its lockout is enforced at the PIF chip, deeper than the simple tabs, and its TV standard is 50Hz rather than 60Hz. Solving lockout alone is not enough if your display cannot handle the resulting signal.

Flashcart shortcut

If you play backups rather than original cartridges, the flashcart handles lockout for you. Region then only affects TV output, which the passthrough cannot change either.

The next pages cover tab removal and PAL passthrough in detail. imports
