HDMI Options
If your goal is a clean digital picture on a modern TV, you have two broad routes with the Nintendo 64: an internal HDMI mod that taps the digital video bus, or an external converter that takes the console's analog output and turns it into HDMI. They differ enormously in quality.
| Option | Source signal | Quality | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| N64Digital (PixelFX) | Internal digital | Excellent | Current, supported, recommended |
| UltraHDMI | Internal digital | Excellent | Discontinued, scarce |
| RGB + external scaler | Analog RGB | Very good | Needs RGB mod first |
| Cheap AV-to-HDMI box | Composite | Poor to fair | Adds lag, soft image |
Internal versus external
Internal digital mods read the picture before any quality is lost, so they look the best by far. External boxes can only work with the noisy analog signal the console already produces, and the cheapest ones add input lag.
Which to pick
For the best result and ongoing support, choose N64Digital. If you find an UltraHDMI at a fair price, it is comparable. If you would rather not open the console, a good external scaler fed by S-Video is acceptable, while bargain HDMI dongles are best avoided. decision
