SD card preparation

SD Card Preparation

Most flashcart problems trace back to the SD card rather than the cart itself. A little care here prevents corrupted saves and failed boots. N64 ROMs are small, so you do not need a large or fast card, only a reliable one.

  1. Buy a genuine card
Counterfeit cards report fake capacities and fail silently. Purchase from a reputable seller and, ideally, test the card before loading content.
  2. Format it correctly
Format the card to the file system your flashcart expects, typically FAT32. Use full formatting rather than a quick one when a card is new to you.
  3. Organise your files
Place the flashcart's menu files and your game folder where the cart looks for them. Keep a tidy folder structure so menus load quickly.
  4. Eject safely
Always use your computer's safe-eject before pulling the card to avoid a half-written file system.

Never remove the SD card while the console is writing a save to it. Doing so can corrupt both the save being written and the card's file system. Power down first.

Keep a backup

Copy the entire card's contents to your computer after setup. If a card fails, you can restore the whole layout, including your saves, onto a replacement in minutes.
