AV Output Options Overview
The original PlayStation packs surprisingly flexible video hardware into its single proprietary multi-out connector. That one port carries several signal types at once, so the picture you get depends entirely on which cable you plug in. Choosing the right one is the cheapest, most dramatic upgrade you can make to how your console looks.
The very first model, the SCPH-1000, is the odd one out: it adds dedicated RCA composite and S-Video jacks alongside the multi-out, a generosity Sony quietly dropped on later boards.
Which signal should I use?
If your display accepts it, RGB is the clear winner. Composite is the lowest common denominator that works everywhere but looks soft and smeary.
| Cable | Quality | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Composite (RCA) | Basic | Universal, but blurry with color bleed |
| S-Video | Good | Separates luma and chroma; sharper than composite |
| RGB SCART | Best | Per-color signals; needs a compatible display and proper sync |
| Digital (HDMI) | Best, modern | Aftermarket mod boards; clean signal to flat panels |
The PSone (SCPH-101) uses a slightly revised video circuit, so a cable that looks perfect on one board may need tweaking on another. Always test before assuming a wiring fault.
