The KSM-440 drive

The KSM-440 Drive and How It Works

Nearly every original PlayStation reads discs using an optical assembly from the KSM-440 family. Understanding how this drive works makes almost every other repair on this console easier, because the laser, the sled it rides on, the spindle that spins the disc, and the lid sensor all cooperate to turn a scratched plastic disc into a playable game.

The optical pickup

At the heart of the drive is the laser pickup unit, often called the optex or pickup. It contains a laser diode, a lens mounted on tiny coils, and a photodiode array that reads light bouncing back off the disc. The lens floats so the console can keep it focused on the data layer while the disc wobbles and spins.

Moving across the disc

The whole pickup sits on a small sled driven by a worm gear and a sled motor. As a game loads data from the inner tracks to the outer edge, the sled walks the laser outward. Worn gear teeth or a dry, gummed-up rail are common causes of seeking and loading problems.

Spinning the disc

The spindle motor spins the disc on a small turntable. Over years of use the spindle bearing and the sled gears wear, which is why an aging PlayStation often struggles with music or full-motion-video discs first.

Why this drive ages

Laser diodes slowly lose output power as they run. A drive that read every disc when new may eventually fail to read anything, even though nothing is visibly broken. This gradual decline is the single most common reason an original PlayStation stops loading games.
