Error messages
Common error messages explained
The original PlayStation shows few on-screen messages, so most "errors" are really specific failure screens or behaviors. This page explains what the common ones mean and where to look next.
The most frequent screens
| "Please insert a PlayStation CD-ROM" | The console can't read a valid disc. Causes: empty drive, dirty or scratched disc, a weak laser, or a lid switch not engaging. |
| Wrong-region / territory message | The disc passed reading but failed the region check. You need a working region bypass. See the region error page. |
| Boots to the menu, never to the game | Often a backup or import being rejected because no modchip or ODE bypass is active, or a bad disc image. |
| Black screen with audio | Usually a video output or cable fault, or a short from a recent install. See the no-video page. |
| Garbled or frozen graphics | A read error mid-load, a corrupt image, or overheating. See the freezing page. |
How to narrow it down
- Note exactly when the message appears: at boot, during loading, or mid-game.
- Test a known-good retail disc to separate console faults from disc or image faults.
- If the issue started right after an install, suspect your wiring and connectors first.
Tip
Most PS1 "errors" are read or region issues in disguise. Clean the disc, confirm your bypass works, and verify your image before assuming a hardware failure.
