Regional overview
Regional Overview
Like most consoles of its era, the PlayStation was sold in region-specific variants. The region affects which discs a console will boot, the video standard it outputs, and in one case the way protection is enforced in the system firmware. Knowing your region is essential before sourcing games or planning import play.
The Three Region Families
- NTSC-U — the North American family, outputting the NTSC video standard.
- NTSC-J — the Japanese family, also NTSC, and home to the earliest units like the SCPH-1000.
- PAL — the European and broader PAL-territory family, outputting the PAL video standard.
Video and Compatibility
NTSC and PAL differ in resolution and refresh rate, so a game built for one standard may display incorrectly on a console expecting the other, even setting aside region locking. This is why imported discs sometimes produce rolling or mismatched pictures.
The PAL BIOS Difference
PAL consoles carry an additional layer of region protection in the BIOS beyond what the NTSC families use. This extra check makes PAL units behave differently when presented with out-of-region discs, and it is something to account for when comparing methods written for NTSC machines.
Because of these differences, guidance and behaviour can vary between regions. Always confirm whether material you are following assumes an NTSC or PAL console.
