Power supply
The internal power supply of the original PlayStation connects to mains voltage and stores charge even after unplugging. Always unplug the console and let it sit before opening it, and do not probe the supply unless you understand how to discharge it safely.
Power Supply Issues (Original Fat)
The original full-size PlayStation has its mains power supply built onto an internal board. After decades of heat cycling, that board ages, and a tired power supply can produce symptoms that look like a failing drive: random resets, failure to spin discs, or a console that simply will not turn on.
- Recognize the signsIntermittent power, resets under load, or a console that runs the menu but cannot sustain a spinning disc can all trace back to a weak supply rather than the laser.
- Inspect for damageWith the console safely unplugged and opened, look at the power board for bulged or leaking capacitors, scorching, and dry or cracked solder joints around heavy components.
- Check the jointsThe connector that carries power to the mainboard is a frequent failure point. Cold or cracked joints here cause flaky behavior that comes and goes with movement.
- Repair or replaceReflowing tired joints and replacing failed capacitors revives many boards. If the supply is badly degraded, fitting a known-good replacement board is the safest route.
- Test under loadConfirm stability by running a demanding disc for an extended session, not just by checking that it powers on.
Because power faults masquerade as drive faults, rule the supply out before spending money on a new laser. power repair
