Glossary
Glossary
PS1 modding has its own vocabulary. These short definitions cover the terms used throughout this guide.
Modchip
A small circuit board soldered inside the console that defeats the copy-protection check, allowing the system to boot homebrew, imports, and disc backups. It works alongside the original optical drive.
ODE (Optical Drive Emulator)
A device that replaces the laser mechanism entirely and feeds the console disc images from an SD card. It eliminates spin noise, speeds loading, and rescues consoles with a dead laser.
PSNee
The popular open-source modchip project for the PS1. It runs on inexpensive microcontrollers and injects the region signal the console expects, making it a low-cost, community-supported choice.
xStation
An optical drive emulator for the PS1 that installs in place of the original drive and loads games from an SD card, valued for its straightforward setup on supported boards.
MODE
The Terraonion MODE, an optical drive emulator supporting both the PS1 and Sega Saturn. It offers broad board compatibility and a feature-rich loader.
TOC (Table of Contents)
Data near the start of a CD listing where each track begins. The PS1 reads the TOC to understand a disc's layout; emulators and backups must reproduce it accurately.
Board revision
The internal mainboard version (such as PU-18 or PM-41) that determines which modding methods and solder points apply to your specific console. glossary
