Installing the xStation
Installing an optical drive emulator involves soldering to the mainboard and disconnecting the original drive. Static, heat damage, or a misplaced connection can brick the console. Use an anti-static strap and follow the revision-specific guide closely — the risk is real.
The xStation is an optical drive emulator (ODE) that replaces the PlayStation's laser unit, loading games from an SD card instead of physical discs. Rather than emulating the authentication signal like a modchip, it stands in for the entire optical drive, so the install centres on disconnecting the original drive and fitting the xStation board in its place.
Use the guide for your revision
xStation supports a range of board revisions, and the connection details differ between them. Always work from the official guide that matches your exact board. Confirm the revision number before you cut or solder anything.
-
IdentifyOpen the console, read the board revision, and select the matching xStation install guide.
-
PrepareGather the xStation board, its ribbon or wiring, an SD card with the firmware and images, and your soldering tools.
-
Disconnect & connectDisconnect the optical drive and attach the xStation board to the points specified for your revision, keeping connections clean and short.
-
ReassembleMount the board, verify no shorts, and loosely close the console so it stays accessible for testing.
-
TestPower on, confirm the menu appears and a game loads from the SD card, then finish reassembly.
ODE SD-card An ODE removes disc swapping entirely, but the soldered connections still demand the same precision.
