Before You Begin
A successful PS1 mod starts with preparation. Take time to gather information and set realistic expectations before you open the console or order parts.
Know your hardware
Identify your console's board revision and region first. Everything else, from which method is viable to which guide you follow, depends on this. A method that suits a PU-18 may not match a PM-41, and PAL units carry extra region protection to account for.
Set expectations
Modding is a hobby that rewards patience. A modchip install requires fine soldering on small pads; an ODE swap involves disassembly and reseating connectors. Neither is instant, and neither is risk-free. If you have never soldered, plan to practice on scrap electronics first, or choose a solderless-friendly path.
Gather what you need
- The correct method documentation for your exact board revision
- Proper tools: a quality screwdriver, and for modchips a fine-tip soldering iron and thin wire
- The chosen hardware (a PSNee chip, or an ODE such as xStation or MODE)
- A clean, well-lit workspace and anti-static precautions
- Time, with no pressure to rush the job
Confirm legitimacy
This guide assumes you own the console and the games involved. Use these techniques for homebrew, imports you bought, and preserving your own discs. preparation
