Motherboard Map & Orientation

Opening a PlayStation reveals a single main board carrying the processor, memory, disc-controller hardware, and the connectors that link to the drive and front panel. This page offers a general orientation so you can find your bearings, not a precise bypass guide. Layouts vary by board revision, so treat the following as a high-level map only.

General Layout

With the console open and the controller ports facing you, the board generally divides into recognisable regions:

  • Front edge — the controller and memory-card port connectors sit nearest you.
  • Rear edge — the AV multi-out, power input, and (on early units) the parallel and serial ports.
  • Centre — the main processor and supporting chips, usually the largest packages on the board.
  • Drive side — ribbon and motor connectors leading to the optical assembly.

About Test Points

Boards carry numerous test points and labelled pads used during manufacturing. Their position and naming differ across PU-7 through PU-23 and the PM-41 family. Because internal modification details depend entirely on the exact revision, this overview deliberately stops at orientation.

Always confirm your board revision first, then consult revision-specific material. Probing pads on the wrong assumption risks damage to an irreplaceable console.

Work Safely

Discharge static before touching the board, photograph connectors before unplugging them, and keep ribbon cables flat to avoid creasing.
