Tools and Software Reference

This page describes the most widely used hardware and software in the PlayStation modding community. Names are given in plain text so you can search for the official project pages yourself.

PSNee

PSNee is an open-source modchip implemented on a small microcontroller, most commonly an inexpensive ATtiny or Arduino-class board. It generates the SCEx anti-piracy signal that the console expects, which unlocks region-free booting and backup support. Because it is open hardware, it is cheap to build, well documented, and supported across most board revisions. Installation requires soldering a handful of wires to specific points on the mainboard.

xStation

xStation is a flash-based Optical Drive Emulator that replaces the original laser. It reads game images from a microSD card and presents an on-screen menu for selecting titles. It installs onto the drive controller without cutting traces on most models and supports cover art and save management. It is a popular choice for consoles with failing or dead optical drives.

Terraonion MODE

The Terraonion MODE is a multi-system ODE that supports the original PlayStation alongside several other Sega and NEC consoles. It loads images from SD or USB storage and includes its own menu interface. It is a premium, closed-source option aimed at users who want a single drive emulator spanning multiple platforms.

TOC Perfect

TOC Perfect refers to a disc-imaging and authoring approach focused on capturing an accurate Table of Contents from original discs. A correct TOC ensures that backups and ODE images reproduce the original disc structure, including audio tracks and subchannel data, which improves compatibility with games that verify disc layout.

PSn00bSDK

PSn00bSDK is an open-source, MIT-licensed homebrew development kit for the PlayStation. It provides libraries, headers, and a toolchain for writing original software and games that run on real hardware, without relying on the proprietary official SDK. It is the standard starting point for new homebrew developers.
