The original PlayStation shipped in many board revisions over its lifetime, and the right modding method depends on which one you have. Board revisions are usually identified by a code printed on the mainboard, such as PU-7, PU-8, PU-18, PU-20, PU-22, or PU-23, with later PSone units carrying their own designation. The matrix below summarizes how each common method maps to those families.

Identifying your board

Open the console and look for the PU-xx code silkscreened on the mainboard. Early units use larger boards with discrete components, while later revisions consolidate functions into fewer chips. The revision determines wiring points for a modchip and mounting options for an ODE.

Always confirm your exact revision before buying hardware. Wiring diagrams and ODE firmware are revision-specific, and using the wrong reference points risks damaging fine pads.

Display and timing caveats

Removing the region lock does not change video standard. A PAL machine still outputs 50Hz unless the game itself runs at 60Hz, so verify your television supports the resulting signal before troubleshooting a perceived compatibility fault.
