No video

No video / black screen after a mod

Symptom: After a modchip, ODE, or other internal install, the console powers on (you may see the power LED) but the screen stays black with no startup logo. Sound may or may not be present.

Likely causes

  • A modchip wire bridging two pads and shorting a nearby signal line.
  • The video output cable, RF unit, or video encoder disturbed during reassembly.
  • A power short pulling the console into protection so it never fully starts.
  • A reversed or unseated ribbon cable after the teardown.

Fixes

  1. Power off immediately. A persistent short can damage components if left running.
  2. Inspect every newly soldered point under magnification for solder bridges, stray whiskers, or wires touching neighboring pads.
  3. Reseat all ribbon and power connectors you disconnected. Confirm none are off by a pin or inserted backward.
  4. Check the AV/video cable and try a different display and cable to rule out the output path.
  5. If you recently adjusted the laser or moved the video encoder area, return those parts to their original state and test again.

Caution: If the console feels warm fast, smells hot, or the power LED flickers, unplug it at once and find the short before powering on again.

Removing the modchip temporarily is a fast way to confirm whether the install caused the blackout or whether an unrelated cable is at fault.
