Controller repair

Controllers carry no dangerous voltage, but the boards are static-sensitive and the housings use small clips that snap if forced. Work on a clean surface, keep track of every screw, and avoid getting cleaning fluid on the rubber membranes, which can swell if soaked.

Controller Stick and Button Repair

Original digital pads and later DualShock controllers both wear out with use. Buttons stop registering, the directional pad feels dead, and analog sticks drift or fail to center. Most of these problems are cheap, satisfying repairs.

  1. Diagnose the fault
    Note whether the issue is unresponsive buttons, a dead d-pad, or analog drift. Each points to a different part: contact pads, membranes, or the stick potentiometers.
  2. Open the shell
    Remove the rear screws and separate the halves gently, keeping the rubber membranes and any springs in order as they lift out.
  3. Clean the contacts
    Wipe the carbon pads on the board and the conductive pads on the rubber membranes with isopropyl alcohol. Oxidation and finger grease here cause most unresponsive buttons.
  4. Service the sticks
    For drift, clean inside the analog modules with contact cleaner. If a stick is badly worn, replacing the whole potentiometer module is the durable fix.
  5. Reassemble and test
    Reseat the membranes, close the shell evenly, and test every input before declaring it fixed.

Worn rubber membranes and conductive pads are available as replacements, so a controller that survives the cleaning stage rarely needs to be thrown away. controller repair
