Disc read errors
Disc read errors / spinning but not loading
Symptom: The disc spins up and you can hear the motor, but the game either never loads, freezes partway through loading, or throws a read error during play. Audio tracks and FMV scenes are common stalling points.
Likely causes
- Scratches, fingerprints, or haze on the disc's data side.
- A laser that is weak from age and can read the inner tracks but struggles toward the outer edge.
- The plastic laser sled rails being dry, causing the laser to track unevenly.
- A worn spindle motor that can't hold a steady speed under load.
Fixes
- Clean the disc from the center outward with a soft cloth. Never wipe in circles, which can deepen track-following scratches.
- Test a different, known-clean game. If only one disc fails, the disc is the problem, not the console.
- If most discs fail near the same loading point, the laser likely struggles with the outer tracks; clean the lens and consider a small power adjustment.
- Apply a tiny amount of plastic-safe grease to the sled rails so the laser glides smoothly.
Note: Vertical or sideways console placement worsens read errors on a tired laser because the disc wobble increases. Keep the unit flat and level on a stable surface while testing.
Persistent errors across many clean discs usually mean the laser assembly is reaching the end of its service life and may need replacement.
