RGB SCART — The Best Analog Picture
RGB is the highest-quality analog output the PlayStation can produce. Instead of squashing the image into a single muddy composite stream, RGB sends the red, green, and blue channels down separate wires. The result is razor-sharp text, clean color boundaries, and none of the rainbow shimmer that plagues composite.
The console outputs RGB straight from the multi-out, so no internal modification is required on most boards. You simply need a quality RGB SCART cable and a display that understands the signal.
What you need
- A PAL or NTSC RGB SCART cable wired for the PlayStation pinout.
- A display with an RGB-capable SCART input, or a converter or upscaler that accepts RGB.
- A correct sync source — this is where most RGB problems begin.
Not every TV labeled with a SCART socket actually processes RGB. Many only accept composite over the same connector. Check that your specific input supports RGB before blaming the cable.
Sync handling is the make-or-break detail. Many cables rely on composite video as sync, which works on forgiving sets but produces a wobbly or unstable image elsewhere. A clean csync feed, discussed separately, gives the most reliable picture across a wide range of displays and is strongly preferred for modern scalers.
Get the cable and sync right, and an unmodified PlayStation rivals far newer hardware on a good RGB monitor.
