Controller not detected

Controller or memory card not detected

Symptom: A controller doesn't respond, an analog pad won't switch modes, or a memory card shows as unformatted, empty, or isn't seen at all. Sometimes one port works while the other doesn't.

Likely causes

  • Dirty or corroded contacts inside the controller/memory card port.
  • A worn port with loose pins that no longer grip the connector.
  • A damaged controller cable or a failing memory card.
  • After an internal install, a disturbed or unseated controller-port ribbon cable.

Fixes

  1. Swap the device to the other port. If it works there, the original port is the problem; if it fails in both, suspect the device.
  2. Test with a different known-good controller and memory card to isolate the fault.
  3. Gently clean the port contacts with isopropyl alcohol on a swab and let them dry before reconnecting.
  4. If you recently opened the console, reseat the controller-port board ribbon cable, which is easy to leave loose during reassembly.
  5. Inspect the port pins for bending; carefully straighten any that are visibly out of line.

Tip

A memory card reading as "unformatted" doesn't always mean data loss. A poor connection can cause this. Reseat and clean the card before formatting, since formatting erases everything on it.
