Lid sensor switch
The lid sensor exists so the laser does not run while the cover is open. Defeating it during testing exposes you to the laser beam and lets the disc spin uncovered. Keep fingers, hair, and tools clear of a spinning disc, and never stare into the pickup.
The Lid Sensor Switch
When you close the PlayStation lid, a small switch tells the console it is safe to spin the disc and read it. If that switch fails or sticks, the console behaves as though no disc is present even when one is loaded, and many repairs and test procedures require deliberately covering or holding the sensor.
- Locate the switchFind the small post or lever near the lid hinge that the closed cover presses down. This is the sensor the console reads.
- Test its actionWith power off, press the post and feel for a clean click. A mushy, stuck, or dead switch is a strong suspect when discs are not detected.
- Cover it for serviceMany cleaning and laser tests need the lid open while the drive runs. Hold or temporarily cover the sensor so the console believes the lid is shut, working carefully around the exposed disc.
- Replace if faultyA failed switch can be swapped for an equivalent tactile or lever switch. Match the throw and mounting so the closed lid still actuates it fully.
- VerifyConfirm the console detects discs reliably with the lid closed and refuses to spin when open.
A flaky lid sensor is easy to overlook, so rule it out early before tearing into the optical assembly. sensor drive
