Wobbly disc
Wobbly disc / spindle problems
Symptom: The disc visibly wobbles or sits crooked when spinning, makes a grinding or rattling noise, or slips and fails to spin up to speed. Read errors often accompany the wobble.
Likely causes
- A worn or cracked spindle hub (the clamp that grips the disc center) that no longer holds the disc flat.
- A tired spindle motor with worn bearings.
- The rubber or plastic clamp on the underside of the lid being deformed or fallen off.
- A disc placed slightly off-center when the lid was closed.
Fixes
- Open the lid and confirm the disc seats fully and clicks onto the spindle hub. Reseat it squarely.
- Inspect the spindle hub for cracks or a missing grip. A split hub lets the disc slip and wobble and is a common failure.
- Check the lid's clamp pad. If it has fallen off or hardened, the disc isn't being pressed down evenly.
- If the motor itself is noisy or weak even with a good hub, the spindle motor assembly is worn and may need replacement.
Caution: Don't run the console with a badly wobbling disc. A disc that isn't held flat can scrape the laser lens and cause further damage. Stop and fix the spindle first.
Keeping the console flat and level also reduces wobble on an aging spindle.
