Region error

Region error on imports

Symptom: An import disc loads partway, then shows a message stating the disc is for the wrong territory, or it refuses to boot and returns to the startup screen. This usually appears as an NTSC/PAL or region mismatch.

Likely causes

  • The console enforces its built-in region lock and no modchip or patch is bypassing it.
  • A modchip is installed but not functioning, so the lock is still active.
  • The game uses a different video standard (NTSC vs PAL) than your console outputs, causing rolling, black-and-white, or no picture even when it "boots."

Fixes

  1. Confirm a working region-bypass solution is in place, whether a modchip, an ODE with region patching, or a swap-trick method.
  2. If you have a chip, verify it is actually active by testing a known import that works on a chipped console. No bypass on a pure import means the lock will always trigger.
  3. For video-standard mismatches, use a modern display or upscaler that accepts both NTSC and PAL, or enable any region/video patching your ODE offers.
  4. Double-check the disc image's region matches what you intend; a mislabeled image can cause confusing results.

Note: Region lock and video standard are two separate problems. A bypass that defeats the region check still won't fix a PAL game running in black and white on an NTSC TV. Address both if needed.
