PlayStation 2 Hacks Guide

Getting Started with PlayStation 2 Homebrew

Welcome to the Getting Started section of our PlayStation 2 modding guide. The PS2 is one of the most-hacked consoles ever made, and unlocking it does not require opening the case or soldering anything. With nothing more than a memory card or a writable disc, you can run unsigned software the console was never sold to play.

"Homebrew" simply means software that runs on the PS2 without Sony's official approval. Once your console can launch homebrew, it can run game loaders, media players, save managers, emulators, and dozens of community-made tools. None of this modifies the games you own; it just adds new capabilities to the machine you already have.

What this guide covers

This is an overview page. The Getting Started section is broken into many sub-pages so you can move at your own pace.

  • What you can do once your PS2 is modded.
  • Compatibility, including the all-important boot-ROM check.
  • A glossary of terms like FMCB, OPL, and MechaCon.
  • Preparation, choosing a method, safety, and backups.

Most users begin with FreeMcBoot/FMCB, a memory-card exploit that loads automatically at startup. Owners of late SCPH-90000 slims and the PSX-style PS2 TV may need an alternative such as FreeDVDBoot because of their boot ROM. We will sort out which path is right for you in the pages ahead.

Read these pages in order if you are new. By the end you will understand exactly what your model supports and which entry point to use.
