Disc Read Error

Disc Read Error (DRE)

A Disc Read Error means the console cannot read the game disc reliably. You may see a "Disc Read Error" message, the game stalling on a black screen, or the laser repeatedly spinning up and down without loading.

Likely causes

  • A dirty, scratched, or warped disc.
  • A worn-out laser, common on older fat consoles.
  • A drifted laser power setting or worn optical gears.
  • Burned discs of poor quality or burned too fast.
  • Region or copy-protection mismatch when playing imports.

Fixes

  1. Clean the disc with a soft cloth, wiping from center outward, and inspect for deep scratches.
  2. Try a different known-good original disc to rule out the laser versus the media.
  3. If only burned discs fail, reburn at low speed (4x) on quality media, or switch to USB/HDD loading via OPL to avoid the laser entirely.
  4. Clean the laser lens gently with a cotton swab and isopropyl alcohol.

Best long-term fix

The PS2 laser is a wear item. Rather than chasing pot adjustments, move your library to USB or an internal HDD and launch through Open PS2 Loader. This bypasses the optical drive completely and gives faster, quieter loading.

If every disc fails and OPL loading works fine, the optical assembly is the culprit and may need a replacement laser or full drive swap.
