SMB share setup
Setting Up an SMB Share on Your PC
SMB loading lets OPL read game images straight from a shared folder on your computer over the network. It is a great option when you do not want to commit to an internal drive, and it works on both fat consoles (through the network adapter) and slim consoles (which have ethernet built in). The trade-off is that your PC must be on and the folder shared whenever you want to play.
Create the shared folder
- Make a folder on your PC to hold your library, then create the standard OPL subfolders inside it for disc images and cover art.
- Right-click the folder and enable sharing. Give the share a simple name without spaces.
- Grant read access to the account OPL will use. Many people create a dedicated user purely for this so they are not exposing their main login.
Point OPL at the share
In OPL's network configuration, set the SMB server fields to match your PC:
- Server IP: your computer's address on the LAN.
- Share name: the exact name you gave the folder.
- User and password: the account credentials, or guest if you allowed anonymous access.
Modern operating systems disable the older SMB protocol versions by default for security. If OPL refuses to connect, you may need to enable legacy SMB support on your PC. Do this only on a trusted home network and turn it off when you are done, as older SMB versions are not safe to expose.
Once connected, switch OPL's device mode to SMB and refresh. Your games should appear in the list, ready to launch over the network.
