Loud fan
Loud fan or overheating
The cooling fan runs loud, rattles, or ramps up quickly, and the console may freeze or shut off during long sessions. After years of use, dust buildup and dried thermal paste leave the PS2 running hotter than it should.
Likely causes
- Dust clogging the fan, vents, and heatsink.
- Dried-out thermal paste on the Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesizer.
- A worn fan bearing causing rattle or grinding.
- The console placed in an enclosed space with poor airflow.
Fixes
- Power off and unplug, then blow out the fan and vents with compressed air.
- If comfortable opening the console, remove the fan and clean the heatsink fins thoroughly.
- Replace dried thermal paste on the main chips with fresh paste for a large temperature drop.
- Give the console open space and elevate it slightly so air can move underneath.
USB and HDD loading helps
Reading from the optical drive spins the disc and adds heat and noise. Loading games from USB, HDD, or SMB through OPL keeps the laser idle, which runs cooler and far quieter.
If the fan grinds even after cleaning, the bearing is failing and the fan should be replaced. Persistent overheating shutdowns after a proper cleaning may indicate a deeper power or board issue.
