Component (YPbPr)

Component (YPbPr) Output

Component video, often labelled YPbPr, is widely regarded as the best analog output the PlayStation 2 can produce on most televisions. It carries the picture across three separate RCA connectors, usually colour-coded green, blue, and red. By splitting brightness (Y) from the two colour-difference signals (Pb and Pr), it avoids the cross-colour smearing that plagues composite and even S-Video.

Why component matters

Beyond sharpness, component is the only common analog cable that can carry a true 480p progressive signal. If you want to run progressive-scan games or force progressive output with homebrew, you need component (or an equivalent digital mod). Composite, S-Video, and most consumer RGB paths are limited to interlaced 480i.

Many cheap third-party "component" cables are actually composite cables in disguise, with only the green plug wired or with internal RGB-to-component shortcuts that degrade the image. Test with a known progressive game to confirm the cable passes a clean 480p signal.

Connecting and configuring

  1. Plug the multi-AV end into the PS2 and match green-to-green, blue-to-blue, red-to-red on the TV's YPbPr inputs.
  2. Connect the white and red audio plugs to the matching audio inputs.
  3. Select the correct input on your television.
  4. For progressive titles, follow the game's on-screen prompt (often holding triangle and X at boot) or use a mode selector to force 480p.

On a capable display, component delivers a crisp, well-saturated image that rivals RGB SCART and clearly outperforms the standard cables bundled with the console.
