Controller/card not detected

Controller or memory card not detected

The console does not recognize a controller, or a memory card fails to show up in the browser, can't be read, or repeatedly asks to be formatted. Since FMCB lives on a memory card, a card fault can also break your homebrew menu.

Likely causes

  • Dirty or oxidized contacts on the card or controller plug.
  • A worn controller or memory card port inside the console.
  • A failing or counterfeit memory card that drops out intermittently.
  • A loose connection from a third-party multitap or extension cable.

Fixes

  1. Power off, then reseat the controller and memory card firmly in their slots.
  2. Clean the gold contacts with isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab; let them dry fully.
  3. Test the same controller and card in the other slot and in a second console to isolate the fault.
  4. Remove any multitaps or extensions and connect directly to the console.

If a card asks to be formatted, do not accept on your FMCB card. Formatting erases the boot files and your saves. Clean the contacts and retry first.

Genuine Sony memory cards are the most reliable for FMCB; cheap clones often cause detection dropouts. If one slot never reads anything while the other works, the port hardware likely needs repair or resoldering.
