Using a pre-made FMCB card

A pre-made FreeMcBoot (FMCB) card is software only. It will not damage your console, but only buy from sellers who flash a clean, current build. Avoid cards bundled with pirated games, as those are both legally risky and frequently outdated.

Why start with a pre-made card

If your PlayStation 2 has a working memory card slot, a pre-flashed FreeMcBoot card is the fastest way to reach a homebrew launcher. You plug it in, power on, and the console boots straight into a menu, with no discs to burn and no exploit timing to fumble. This makes it the recommended path for newcomers and for fat consoles whose disc drives are tired.

FMCB lives entirely on the memory card. Your console's internal software is never modified, so removing the card returns the PS2 to a stock state. That reversibility is part of why the method is so popular.

What you need

  • An 8 MB PlayStation 2 memory card flashed with a recent FMCB or FreeMcBoot 1.966+ build.
  • A compatible console. Most fat models and many slim models work, though the latest slim revisions need a different approach.
  1. Insert the card
Place the FMCB card in memory card slot one and make sure no game disc is loaded.
  2. Power on
Turn the console on normally. After the boot logo, the FMCB launcher appears instead of the standard browser.
  3. Explore the menu
You now have access to wLaunchELF and Open PS2 Loader. launcher ready

From here you can manage files, configure settings, and load backups of your own games. If you later want a launcher that survives without the card, continue with a disc-based bootstrap.
