Progressive Scan and GSM

Most PlayStation 2 games render at 480i, an interlaced mode that splits each frame into two fields. On modern flat panels this often looks soft and flickery because the display has to deinterlace the signal. Progressive scan (480p) draws every line in one pass, producing a cleaner, more stable image. The catch is that only a minority of games offer a native progressive option, and you need component output to carry it.

What GSM does

GSM, the Graphics Synthesizer Mode selector, is a homebrew tool that intercepts how a game programs the PS2's video hardware. It can force many interlaced games into progressive output, change the output resolution, and adjust other video parameters that the game would not normally expose. This lets titles without a built-in progressive option run in 480p on compatible displays.

GSM is not magic. Forcing a mode the game was not designed for can cause cropped or shifted images, garbled menus, or crashes. Compatibility varies title by title, and some games simply refuse to cooperate. Always test before relying on a forced mode.

Typical workflow

  1. Boot GSM from a homebrew-enabled PS2 (memory card exploit, modchip, or disc launcher).
  2. Select the game disc or backup you want to launch.
  3. Choose a target field mode, such as forced progressive (480p).
  4. Launch the game and verify the picture is stable and correctly positioned.

For games that already support progressive natively, you usually do not need GSM at all native. GSM shines when you want to push interlaced-only titles into a sharper mode on a component-connected display.
