Accessories
The PlayStation 2 supported a wide range of peripherals, and many of them are still worth knowing about when you set up a modded console. This page covers the accessories that matter most for homebrew, multiplayer, and storage.
Multitap
The multitap plugs into a controller port and splits it into four, letting up to eight players join in compatible games. It is the classic way to host living-room tournaments. Note that the slim and original PS2 models use physically different multitap designs, so make sure you get the version that fits your console.
Light guns
Light gun games rely on the way old CRT televisions draw the screen. On modern flat-panel displays the original guns generally do not work, because the timing they depend on is gone. If you want the authentic experience, pair a period light gun with a CRT.
Controllers
| Official DualShock 2 | Pressure-sensitive buttons and reliable analog sticks. The safest choice for full compatibility. |
| Third-party pads | Often cheaper, but quality varies and some lack pressure sensitivity that certain games expect. |
Third-party memory cards
Cheap unofficial memory cards are a common source of grief. Some report a false capacity, drop saves, or corrupt data, which is especially risky when the card also holds your boot exploit. Stick to genuine cards or well-reviewed reproductions, and keep backups.
Storage beyond cards
Network adapters and hard drives open up extra storage and FTP transfers on supported models, expanding what your homebrew setup can do.
