MechaCon & Dragon
MechaCon & "Dragon" chips
The MechaCon is the PlayStation 2's mechanical/system controller chip. It manages housekeeping tasks such as power, the disc tray, region settings, and various configuration flags stored on the console.
Across the PS2's life the MechaCon was revised many times. Later revisions are informally grouped under the nickname "Dragon". The reason hobbyists care is that the MechaPwn tool works with these MechaCon generations to update the console's stored region and configuration flags — the basis for region-free operation on a wide range of models (roughly the SCPH-50000 through SCPH-90000 era).
Why it matters
Knowing your console's generation helps set expectations for region-related tools. The exact behavior and any caveats — such as effects on the built-in DVD player on older units — are covered on the MechaPwn page.
For everyday homebrew and game loading you don't need to think about the MechaCon at all; it's mainly relevant when you want to change region settings.
