Tools and Software Reference

This page describes the core software used across PlayStation 2 modding. Each tool is named in plain text only. Always obtain software from its official community source and verify file integrity before use.

How these fit together

Most setups combine an entry point that gets homebrew running with utility applications you launch afterward. Pick one boot method, then layer the loaders and tools you need on top.

Boot and exploit tools

FreeMcBoot is the classic memory card exploit. Once installed on a genuine card, it auto-launches a configurable boot menu, giving you instant access to homebrew without a disc. entry point

FreeDVDBoot exploits the PS2 DVD player to load homebrew straight from a burned or imaged disc. It is invaluable on consoles where memory card methods are blocked. entry point

MechaPwn patches the Mechacon firmware. It can unlock FreeMcBoot installation on stubborn models and perform region changes, but parts of its effect are permanent. firmware

PS2BBL, the PS2 Basic Boot Loader, is a modern open source replacement for the FreeMcBoot launcher. It offers flexible auto-launch configuration and is actively maintained. launcher

OpenTuna is a memory card exploit chain used to bootstrap homebrew, often paired with PS2BBL as an alternative to older FreeMcBoot installers. entry point

Loaders and utilities

Open PS2 Loader (OPL) is the standard game loader. It runs backups from USB, internal HDD, network SMB shares, or virtual machine images, with a polished interface and broad compatibility settings. loader

wLaunchELF is the essential file manager and ELF launcher. It copies files between memory cards, USB, and HDD, formats drives, and launches homebrew applications. utility

GSM, the Graphics Synthesizer Mode selector, forces output modes such as progressive scan or 480p on games that otherwise lack the option, improving display compatibility. display

PS2RD is a real-time cheat and debugging tool, letting you apply codes to games while they run for testing and customization. cheats

Tool versions matter. Newer console board revisions sometimes require the latest builds of these utilities. An outdated installer can fail silently or behave unexpectedly.
