Loading from microSD (MX4SIO)
Loading from microSD (MX4SIO)
MX4SIO is a clever adapter that turns the PlayStation 2's memory-card slot into a microSD reader. Because the memory-card port talks over the console's SIO2 interface rather than the sluggish USB controller, a microSD card can deliver speeds that rival an internal drive, making MX4SIO one of the best value options for slim consoles that cannot fit an internal HDD.
What you need
- An MX4SIO adapter (often sold as a SIO2SD-style board).
- A reasonably fast microSD card.
- A card reader for your computer to copy games across.
Setup
- Format the microSD card as FAT32.
- Create DVD and CD folders, just like a USB setup.
- Copy your ISO or ZSO images into the right folder.
- Insert the card into the MX4SIO adapter and seat the adapter in a memory-card slot.
- In OPL, enable the MX4SIO source and refresh the game list.
| Console | Why MX4SIO shines |
|---|---|
| Slim models | No internal HDD bay, so MX4SIO gives near-HDD speed without opening the case |
| Fat models | Still fast and convenient, though an internal HDD is faster |
Card quality counts
A genuine, fast microSD card makes a real difference. Slow or counterfeit cards undercut the whole point of MX4SIO and can cause read errors.
While a game runs, that memory-card slot is occupied by the adapter, so plan your save setup around using a virtual memory card or the second slot.
