Choosing your method

Choosing Your Method

There is no single "best" entry point; the right one depends on your hardware. Use the phases below to narrow it down, then confirm with the compatibility page.

  1. Check your boot ROM
If you can already run homebrew, read the version in uLaunchELF. Boot ROM 2.30 or 2.50 rules out plain FMCB.
  2. Try FreeMcBoot/FMCB first
For the vast majority of consoles, the memory-card method is the easiest and most convenient. It loads automatically and needs no disc.
  3. Fall back to FreeDVDBoot
If your console has a 2.30/2.50 boot ROM (late SCPH-90000 slims, PS2 TV) or you simply prefer a disc-based trigger, burn a FreeDVDBoot DVD-R instead.
  4. Make it persistent
Once you have an entry point, install a persistent solution such as PS2BBL or OpenTuna so homebrew is always available.

Do not guess your boot-ROM version. Confirm it before committing to a method, or you may prepare files your console cannot run.
