Is My PS2 Compatible?

Almost every PlayStation 2 can run homebrew, but the entry method you use depends on your console's hardware. The single most important factor is the boot ROM version baked into the machine.

The boot-ROM gate

The classic FreeMcBoot/FMCB memory-card exploit works on the vast majority of models. However, the latest hardware shipped with newer boot ROMs that FMCB cannot trigger. Specifically, consoles with boot ROM 2.30 or 2.50 are not compatible with the original memory-card exploit. These include late SCPH-90000 slim units and the PSX-style PS2 TV (Bravia) sets.

How to check your boot ROM

If you can already boot homebrew, launch uLaunchELF and read the system information; it reports the boot-ROM version directly. If you cannot boot homebrew yet, note your model number and manufacture date as a rough guide, then confirm with uLaunchELF once a method works.

A 2.30 or 2.50 boot ROM does not mean you are locked out. It simply means you should skip plain FMCB and use a disc-based or persistent method instead.

MethodWorks on
FreeMcBoot / FMCBMost models; not boot ROM 2.30 / 2.50
FreeDVDBoot (DVD-R)Models with a DVD drive, including many late slims
PS2BBL / OpenTunaPersistent setups once an entry point exists

When in doubt, start by checking the boot ROM. It determines your whole path.
