Before You Begin
Modding a PS2 is beginner-friendly, but a little preparation makes the process smooth and prevents avoidable mistakes. Read this page fully before you start downloading anything.
What you will need
- A PlayStation 2 and its controller. Confirm the model number printed on the underside.
- An official or quality memory card (8 MB). The FMCB method installs onto this card, so it should be one you do not mind dedicating to homebrew.
- A computer with a card reader or a USB drive, depending on your chosen method, to prepare files.
- Writable DVD-R media if you plan to use FreeDVDBoot.
Know your model
Fat consoles, slim consoles, and the PS2 TV behave differently. Fat units may include a network adapter and HDD bay; slims are USB-focused. Late SCPH-90000 slims and the PS2 TV can carry the 2.30/2.50 boot ROM that affects which method you use.
Set your expectations
- You will not need to solder or open the console for the standard software methods.
- Homebrew adds features; it does not improve original game performance.
- Take your time. Following steps carefully matters more than speed.
Plan your path first
Before downloading tools, work through the compatibility and method-selection pages. Knowing your boot-ROM version up front saves you from preparing files for a method your console cannot use.
