Error messages
Common PS2 error messages explained
The PlayStation 2 shows a handful of recurring messages and symptoms when something goes wrong. Knowing what each one points to saves time, especially on a softmodded console where the cause might be a setting rather than hardware.
| Message / symptom | Usual meaning |
|---|---|
| Disc Read Error | Laser cannot read the disc; dirty media, scratch, or worn laser. |
| Please insert a PlayStation or PlayStation 2 format disc | Disc unreadable, wrong region, or a bad burn. |
| The data is corrupted (memory card) | Card contacts dirty or card failing; do not format an FMCB card. |
| Browser only, no homebrew menu | FMCB card missing, in wrong slot, or boot files erased. |
| Black screen after selecting a game | Bad ISO, wrong OPL compatibility mode, or video mode mismatch. |
How to approach any error
- Note exactly when it appears: at boot, when selecting a game, or mid-play.
- Isolate hardware from software by testing a clean original disc and a known-good memory card.
- For loader errors, check folder names, the selected source, and compatibility modes in OPL.
One symptom, many causes
The same message can stem from media, the laser, a card, or a setting. Change one variable at a time so you know which fix actually worked rather than guessing.
