Arcade Emulators

Beyond home consoles, the Original Xbox is a capable platform for arcade emulation. Arcade boards from the 1980s and 1990s often used hardware comparable to or simpler than home consoles of the era, putting many classic cabinets well within the Xbox's reach.

What you can play

Arcade emulators on the Xbox can run a large library of coin-op classics, from early single-screen games through scrolling beat-'em-ups, shooters, and fighting games. Performance is generally excellent for older boards, while a few of the most demanding later systems may run less smoothly.

  • Golden-age and 16-bit-era arcade boards run at full speed on the Xbox
  • Available both as RetroArch cores and as standalone arcade emulators
  • Controller configuration lets you map arcade buttons to the Xbox pad

About ROM sets and BIOS files

Arcade emulators are particular about file versions. A given emulator build expects ROM sets that match its version, and some games require the correct BIOS file from that board. If a game refuses to load, a version mismatch is the usual cause.

Arcade emulation is legal when you use it with games you are legally entitled to run. Acquiring copyrighted arcade ROMs you don't own is not permitted; this guide covers emulation purely for lawful, personal use.
